enCOMPASS — Less Energy, Smarter Living

An integrated socio-technical approach to behavioural change for energy saving, developing innovative digital tools to make energy consumption data available and understandable for different users and stakeholders.

enCOMPASS implements an integrated socio-technical approach to behavioural change for energy saving through innovative digital tools that make energy consumption data understandable and actionable for residents, employees, building managers, utilities, and ICT providers.

Problem & Context

Despite growing awareness of climate change, energy consumption remains high. The challenge is not technical but behavioural: users lack effective tools to understand their energy use, compare their behaviour to others, and find motivation for sustainable change.

Solution & Approach

enCOMPASS implements an integrated strategy combining digital tools, behavioural insights, and participatory design. The platform combines four complementary components:

User-Centred Visualisation

Intuitive, stakeholder-tailored dashboards that transform complex energy data into actionable insights for residents, employees, building managers, and utilities — enabling informed decision-making on energy consumption.

Context-Aware Recommendations

Personalised suggestions based on each user's specific context: building type, climate zone, occupancy patterns, and historical usage. Recommendations adapt as user behaviour and building conditions change.

Adaptive Gamification

Playful engagement mechanisms including a board game based on real energy consumption data, social challenges, and progress tracking. Transforms energy savings into shared, rewarding experiences within families and communities.

Intelligent Control

Smart metering infrastructure and home automation sensors enable seamless integration of user-driven behavioural change with automated energy management, maximising savings while preserving comfort.

Pilot Implementation & Testing

The solution was rigorously tested across three European climatic zones, covering diverse building types (residential, schools, offices) and stakeholder groups. Real-world pilots validated the platform's effectiveness and provided insights for continuous improvement.

EIPCM’s Role

EIPCM co-managed the enCOMPASS project and played a leading role in directing the German pilot in Haßfurt, one of the three major test sites. The institute contributed to all key project phases: requirements gathering, platform design, pilot coordination, and impact assessment.

EIPCM's research focus was on developing visualisation techniques and context-based recommendation systems that make complex energy data accessible and actionable for diverse user groups — from individual households to building managers and utilities. This work directly informed the platform's user-centred design and contributed to establishing best practices for behavioural change interventions in energy management.

Results & Impact

The enCOMPASS platform demonstrated significant potential to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20–25% through integrated behavioural change strategies.
